Pre-Foromic Workshop: Business models and technologies to improve financial inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)
More than 250 ideas, proposing to exploit technology’s potential in order to expand and improve various financial services for the underserved population in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), were received in the Program’s second Call. In this workshop, we present a selection of the best ideas for sharing the main challenges and the impact on its implementation.
Session of 1.30 h, structured in 3 mini-sessions for discussion and 1 for conclussions.
INTRODUCTION: Results of the Technologies for Financial Inclusion Program's second Call of proposals and some outstanding trends towards financial inclusion by Nate Bourns (DAI-Mexico).
SESSION 1 (20 minutes). Moderator: Natasha Bajuk (IDB/MIF)
> Mobile Banking and Mobile Payments:
• Emerging Models in Latin America: payment platforms, mobile phone operators, financial institutions, directly and/or combination of actors.
• What models are emerging?

• What models of agents are emerging as the most sustainable in LAC?
• What drawbacks and opportunities are there in the market?
• How can technology's potential be exploited in business models through agents?

Participant in Panel 3B: technology and financial inclusion in the region: what mobile banking and payments models are working?
Some of the questions addressed during this workshop are:
• What are the mobile banking inclusive models that make sense in Latin America and the Caribbean context?
• Why are payments and other mobile banking services attractive to microfinance institutions and other intermediaries in the industry?
